About Argentina Football Player Gabriel Batistuta

Gabriel Batistuta Argentina football legend Gabriel Omar Batistuta was born on February 1, 1969 in Reconquista, Argentina.

Batistuta first match on the international level with Argentina was in the Copa America tournament in 1991 in Chile. Batistuta was absolutely amazing in this tournament, showing his remarkable scoring ability by netting 6 goals and practically winning the tournament single handedly for Argentina.

Two years later, Batistuta suited up for Argentina once again in the Copa America tournament in Ecuador. Argentina dominated for the second time with Batistuta leading the way and won Copa America once again.

In 1994, it was time for the World Cup which was held in North America, but Argentina was not as fortunate as they were in the Copa America tournament. Argentina football great Diego Maradona was suspended from the tournament because of doping allegations due to supplements he was taking to control his weight. Batistuta held his own though, scoring 4 goals in 4 games with a hat-trick in the first match of play versus Greece, but it was not enough as missing Maradona in the lineup was just too much of hit to Argentina’s confidence on the pitch, they were knocked out very early in the tournament.

In 1998, during the qualifying matches for the up coming World Cup in France, Batistuta had a falling out with Argentina’s coach and as a result did not play in many matches until the World Cup where he scored 5 goals, 3 of which in a hat-trick against Jamaica, but they eventually lost to Netherlands 2-1in the quarterfinals and were knocked out of the tournament.

Four years later in 2002, Batistuta retired from international football and now he works as a commentator where he covered the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

With 56 international goals in 78 appearances, Batistuta is the all-time leading scorer for Argentina and quite possibly one of the best strikers Argentina has ever had.
